Your uniform is an investment — and a little know-how goes a long way in keeping it looking professional wash after wash. Here are five simple tips every uniform wearer should know.
1. Always Cut Loose Threads — Never Pull Them
Did you know that pulling a loose cotton thread can cause your garment to unravel? It's one of the most common mistakes people make. If you spot a loose thread, always use a small pair of scissors to snip it off cleanly at the base. A quick snip takes two seconds and saves your garment!
2. Turn Your Uniform Inside Out Before Washing
Washing your uniform inside out protects the outer surface of the fabric from friction and fading. It also helps preserve any embroidery or branding, keeping it looking sharp for longer.
3. Wash on a Gentle, Cool Cycle
High heat is the enemy of fabric longevity. Washing on a cool or warm gentle cycle reduces shrinkage, protects the fibres, and helps your uniform keep its shape and colour. Always check the care label for specific instructions.
4. Don't Over-Dry
If you use a dryer, remove your uniform while it's still slightly damp and hang it to finish drying. Over-drying causes unnecessary wear on the fabric and can lead to shrinkage. Hanging to dry also reduces the need for heavy ironing.
5. Never Use a Hot Iron on Certain Fabrics
This is a big one! Using a hot iron on the wrong fabric can cause a permanent shine or scorch mark that cannot be removed — ruining your garment. Synthetic and blended fabrics are especially vulnerable. Always check your care label first, use the correct heat setting for your fabric type, and when in doubt, place a pressing cloth between the iron and your garment. It takes an extra second and could save your uniform.
